Tax Exemption Messages

If you're a tax-exempt customer, you'll see tax code messages at checkout if tax has been applied to your order.

In some cases, tax may be applied to an order, even if you're using a tax-exempt account. The following table lists tax messages you may see at checkout and explains the reasons for these messages:

This Seller does not participate in Amazon's tax-exemption program. Amazon calculates tax on behalf of the seller in accordance with their instructions. Each online seller may have different tax collection obligations depending on their business procedures, operations, and activities. Not all sellers participate in ATEP. If you need a refund for tax charged on orders Fulfilled by Amazon, contact Amazon Customer Service. If the order was fulfilled by a third-party seller, contact the seller through buyer/seller messaging.
Your account does not hold an exemption for the state you are shipping to. Your account does not hold an exemption for the state where you are shipping to. To set up an exemption for a new state, go to Tax Exemption.
The tax exemption for the state you are shipping to is expired. The account exemption is expired for the state items are being shipped to. Therefore, tax is calculated. To set up an exemption for a new state, go to Tax Exemption.
During checkout, tax exemption was removed. The buyer chose to remove the tax exemption during checkout. All exemption-eligible items contain a link to remove sales tax. Look for the link "Tax Exemption Applied" or "Tax Exemption Available" in checkout to update the tax exemption for that item.
This item is not eligible for full tax exemption. The item purchased isn't eligible for full tax exemption. This may occur when a local exemption document is required or the exemption doesn't remove all applicable taxes. In order to set up a local level exemption to the account, go to Tax Exemption. Your tax exemption is limited to purchases from specific sellers. If you choose to upload your certificate and it requires you to enter a seller of record on the certificate, if you choose to list Amazon or any of its subsidiaries, we can only provide exemption on those purchases. If you'd like to extend your exemption to Amazon.com Services Inc., its affiliates, and participating third-party sellers on Amazon's marketplace, you don't need to enter a seller of record. A date, signature, and description of items (if applicable) is all that is required on the certificate. If you'd like to set up an exemption, go to Tax Exemption.
